Tuesday’s confrontation between a Russian fighter jet and an American drone over the Black Sea, according to the US Army, may have further heightened tensions between Moscow and Washington. A US Air Force intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance unmanned MQ-9 aircraft was in international airspace over the Black Sea when two Russian Su-27 aircraft performed “an unsafe and unprofessional intercept” with it.

According to a statement from the US European Command, one of the Russian Su-27 aircraft impacted the MQ-9’s propeller at around 7:03 AM (CET), necessitating the use of US troops to put the MQ-9 to a stop in international waters.

The US military added that the Su-27s repeatedly flew in front of the MQ-9 and dropped gasoline on it in “a reckless, environmentally unsound, and unprofessional way” prior to the accident. The military continued, “This occurrence shows a lack of competency in addition to being risky and disrespectful.

US Air Force General James Hecker, who is in charge of the nation’s Air Force in the area, claimed that a Russian aircraft intercepted and struck an American MQ-9 aircraft as it was carrying out routine operations in international airspace, causing the MQ-9 to crash and be completely destroyed.

He said, “We call on the Russians to conduct themselves properly and safely. In fact, this risky and unprofessional behaviour by the Russians almost caused both planes to crash.” US and Allied aircraft will continue to fly in international airspace, he said.

According to the command, Russian pilots have a history of taking risky activities when interacting with US and allied aircraft over international airspace, particularly over the Black Sea. This event fit within that pattern. These risky, aggressive measures by the Russian flight crew run the risk of miscalculation and unintended escalation.

The command also stated that, in accordance with the applicable host nation and international rules, US Air Force aircraft routinely fly over sovereign territory and through international airspace throughout Europe.

“These missions promote Allied, partner, and U.S. national objectives to strengthen collective European defence and security,” it stated.

According to John Kirby, a spokesman for the National Security Council, US President Joe Biden was informed about the event.
